Geographic coverage

This dataset contains interstate migration between the 8 states and territories. It does not include departures from or arrivals to other territories (Christmas Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Jervis Bay Territory and Norfolk Island), which are available on request for revised estimates up to the quarter ending June 2016.

Population coverage

All Australian residents who have changed their usual place of residence from one state or territory to another.

Key statistical concept

Interstate migration is the movement of people over a state or territory boundary for the purpose of changing their place of usual residence. Net interstate migration is the number of arrivals minus the number of departures.
