Since 2016, estimates have been compiled using Census data, birth and death registrations and modelled estimates of regional internal and overseas migration. Births and deaths data is provided by the state and territory Registries of Births, Deaths and Marriages. Internal migration data is based on information on change of address advised from Medicare and the Department of Defence in the case of the military. Overseas migration is prepared using Census data. Prior to 2016, ERP was compiled using Census data, mathematical models and a range of indicator data sources including building approvals, Medicare enrolments and electoral roll counts.
