Estimates of ERP by country of birth by age and sex at the state/territory level are a derivation of Census data. A further adjustment is necessary to produce estimates at the nearest June 30 reference date. This was accomplished using data on birth and death registrations and estimates of overseas arrivals and departures. For more information, refer to estimating national and state population in Population Estimates: Concepts, Sources and Methods, 2009, linked below.

After each Census, estimates for the preceding intercensal period are revised by incorporating an additional adjustment (intercensal discrepancy) to ensure that the total intercensal increase agrees with the difference between the estimated resident populations at the two 30 June dates in the respective Census years.
