Since 2016, total sub-state population estimates and age-sex breakdowns have been compiled using Census data, birth and death registrations and modelled estimates of regional internal and overseas migration. Further information on these data sources is contained in the Explanatory Notes of Regional Population Growth, Australia (cat. no. 3218.0). Prior to 2016, total population estimates were modelled out from the Census using population indicator data, and then broken down by age and sex using birth and death registrations, and synthetic estimates of migration based on the previous Census.
